13 hurt in shooting at bustling entertainment district in Austin; suspect not in custody

Austin, Texas-A shooting in a bustling red-light district in downtown Austin, Texas, injured 13 people early Saturday morning, and police said the suspect had not been detained.

Two of the injured were in critical condition, but none died in local time, Austin Deputy Secretary Joseph Chacon said at a press conference at 4 am.

The firing occurred before 1:30 am. A popular area along 6th Avenue with bars and restaurants. According to Chacón, the streets were covered with barricades and traffic was blocked during the shooting.

It is unknown what he shot.

Eleven of the injured were taken to a local hospital, another to another hospital, and another to an emergency medical center with a gunshot wound, Chacon said.

Chacón also said that some police officers transferred patients to hospitals during police patrols.

The criminal was not immediately arrested. Chacon said the suspect’s police account was less detailed, but said the person was believed to be a man.

Investigators were considering surveillance videos and other evidence from the area, Chacon said. He asked someone who had information about the shooting to contact the police.
