2021 Olympics viewer’s guide: How to watch, NBC’s coverage strategy, new sports and more

If you have mixed emotions about the Tokyo Olympics, you are not alone. Over the next two weeks I will gorge myself on the coverage from Tokyo while thinking how absurd it is to be holding a global sporting event in a city under a state of emergency until Aug. 22. If it were my city, I would never vote for the Olympics to be held there given the financial bloat. Yet I have traveled to seven Olympic cities willingly over the last 19 years and consider the Olympic assignment the best of my professional career. I loathe the IOC and love the actual Olympics. It all feels like a hypocritical stance.

NBCUniversal is well aware of the paradigm they are entering this month — an Olympics unlike any they have broadcast including no foreign fans in venues and no local attendance in Tokyo-area venues.
