According to COPE reporter Antonio Ruiz, Atletico Madrid are seriously considering the prospect of not extending the loan of Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann for the next season.
The Frenchman, who enjoyed plenty of success with Atleti before signing for Barça in 2019, returned to Wanda Metropolitano last summer.
Griezmann moved to Los Rojiblancos late on the transfer deadline day, joining on a loan deal, which could be extended to two years, following which Atletico Madrid could sign him permanently for a stipulated fee.
However, the French international’s return to the Wanda Metropolitano has been anything but memorable. So far in the 2021/22 campaign, Griezmann has managed an average return of just eight goals and six assists from 37 matches in all competitions.
Considering the disappointing campaign Atletico Madrid have had, a revamp in the summer could potentially be on the cards. And, Griezmann could end up being one among the casualties, with the club now seriously considering terminating his loan deal after just one year.
Indeed, as per the report, Los Colchoneros have already conveyed their thoughts over the matter to Griezmann and his representatives. Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin also met with Barcelona sporting director Mateu Alemany, and the topic of the forward was discussed.
Ending his loan deal would save a huge chunk of wage budget for the Spanish capital outfit as the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner pockets a massive €18 million per year salary.
What now remains to be seen is whether Atletico Madrid actually go ahead with such a move or decide to persist with the Barcelona forward for another season. In case of a termination, the Frenchman will find himself back at Camp Nou, where he is unlikely to have a future.
An intriguing summer awaits Griezmann as he seeks clarity on his future at the Wanda Metropolitano.
