Writer and artist Cliff Chiang returns to the DC Universe for Catwoman: Lonely City, a leap into Selina Kyle’s future from DC Black Label.
Selina Kyle is set to take the spotlight in a story all her own this October with Catwoman: Lonely City, a new series from DC Black Label. Even more surprising for fans of the Batman family, the series will be both written and drawn by industry veteran Cliff Chiang, taking Catwoman into a future, to the Gotham City after Batman.
Formerly an assistant editor with DC Comics, the Eisner Award winning artist’s work has been featured in comics from a variety of publishers, known to DC fans for everything from Wonder Woman, Zatanna, Green Arrow and Black Canary, and Batman: Black & White. Chiang returns to the world of the Caped Crusader, presenting a world unlike any Gotham City has seen before: a world without Batman… where Selina Kyle is the hero Gotham City needs.
The official announcement comes with a batch of cover artwork and character sketches for fans to analyze–yes, that includes a new Catwoman costume designed for a different future age–but the official synopsis of the story reveals that Chiang will not be ‘playing it safe’ with this vision of Gotham’s future:
Ten years ago, the massacre known as Fools’ Night claimed the lives of Batman, The Joker, Nightwing, and Commissioner Gordon…and sent Selina Kyle, the Catwoman, to prison. A decade later, Gotham has grown up—it’s put away costumed heroism and villainy as childish things. The new Gotham is cleaner, safer…and a lot less free, under the watchful eye of Mayor Harvey Dent and his Batcops. It’s into this new city that Selina Kyle returns, a changed woman…with her mind on that one last big score: the secrets hidden inside the Batcave! She doesn’t need the money—she just needs to know…who is “Orpheus?”
Each of the four prestige issues will be 48 pages long, with Chiang handling writing, coloring, drawing, and lettering. “Catwoman: Lonely City is poised to be the kind of next-level storytelling that will change the way that fans see Gotham City, its heroes, and its villains forever,” DC’s solicit continues. With the major players in Gotham out of the way, this version of Gotham will be unlike anything anyone has seen before.
A world without heroes and villains with only Selina Kyle left to solve the mysteries is as unique a take on Batman’s world as fans are likely to find in comics currently being published. Which means this DC Black Label series will be of interest not only to Selina’s fans, but anyone eager to see a new version of Gotham at DC. This exciting take on Catwoman will be available to purchase in print and download digitally on October 19, 2021.
