Daytona Beach, Florida-Michael McDowell emerges as a surprise winner for the 2021 Daytona 500, with a big crash on the final lap by Brad Keselowski and his teammate Penske and late frontman Joey Logano. I escaped.
The rampant finale of the NASCAR Cup Series season opener gave McDowell his first career win in his 14th season at the highest levels of sport.
When the Daytona International Speedway backstretch began to crash in the second half, Logano and Keselowski broke up and created McDowell’s opening at the 34th Ford Front Row Motorsports. Just as NASCAR threw a warning flag, McDowell took the lead. And when it came out, he was on the front line, so he was declared a winner.
Defending Cup Series champion Chase Elliott finished second, with Austin Dillon, Kevin Harvic and Denny Hamlin dominating most of the race, leading 98 laps. Logano was 12th and Keserowski was 13th.
McDowell, on the other hand, was leading only part of the final lap, but that’s all that matters.
An incredible 100-to-1 underdog, McDowell told FOX Sports shortly after the race. I just have to thank God. For many years, I was waiting for such an opportunity to work. … and finally I had a Ford partner and everyone crashed, but fortunately I was able to survive. I appreciate it very much.
Teammates Keserowski and Logano stayed to understand it at the end of the race.
He wanted to make a pass to win the Daytona 500, and it was terrible, Keserowski said. I don’t feel like I made a mistake, but I can’t drive someone else’s car. It’s very frustrating.
Great turmoil, I guess, Logano said about the ending. Chaos attacked. It looked like we all collided in one place. It’s a real shame that none of the Penske cars won, but at least Ford won, so I’m very happy with McDowell.
I think it was a great opportunity to lead the final lap, but if I didn’t win, I’m very happy that McDowell won. It’s great to see him win the Daytona 500 because he’s a great person, a great person, a great leader in life, and has helped me a lot in my life.
The festival began with new celebrity team owners Michael Jordan and Pitbull taking part in pre-race action, which Pitbull ordered the driver to start the engine as a grand quarterback. Jordan teamed up with Hamlin to aim for the Daytona 500 title for the third consecutive year as co-owner of 23XI Racing, with Baba Wallace commanding the 23rd Toyota. Pitbull teamed up with former racing driver Justin Marks to form Trackhouse Racing with Daniel Suarez. As a No.99 Chevrolet team driver.
But it didn’t take long for the turmoil to occur in NASCAR’s most famous races. The Big One was a 2.5-mile super-fast hit early on, and on lap 14, a small move caused a major accident, several cars were caught and shot through the muddy grass in the infield.
No.20 Toyota’s Christopher Bell inadvertently contacted Arick Aluminum Roller’s No. 10 Ford, and the Aluminum Roller’s car was shot to the right and collided with Alex Bowman at No. 48 Chevrolet. Aluminum Roller and Bowman collided with the wall and bounced off. The car ran behind and caused a big crash.
In addition to Almirora and Bowman, other drivers involved include Suarez, Martin Truex Jr., Ryan Blaney, Ryan Newman, William Byron, Matt DiBenedetto, Kurt Busch, Eric Jones and Tyler. -Includes Redick, Chris Buescher and David Ragan.
Minutes after the accident, rain struck the course, the race was flagged red and a long delay of nearly six hours began.
