It’s been eight years since Bruce Willis last took down bad guys as John McClane in the oft-maligned and berated fifth entry in the Die Hard franchise, but is a Die Hard 6 happening? Yippee Ki Yay, Mr. Falcon. So goes the TV-edited version of McClane’s iconic catchphrase in Die Hard 2, much to the amusement of most fans. Sadly though, Die Hard‘s most recent outing didn’t leave people with many reasons to find themselves amused, or even remotely thrilled it would seem. As telegraphed by the groan-worthy “Yippee Ki Yay, Mother Russia” tagline to the movie, 2013’s A Good Day To Die Hard ended up being the clear nadir of the legendary Bruce Willis-led action franchise.
While Willis was still watchable enough as McClane, despite seeming more than a little bored by the script, Jai Courtney was quite awful in his turn as John’s son Jack, who gets a lot of focus in what seems like an attempt to phase Bruce Willis out of the leading role. Courtney earned many fans for his fun portrayal of Captain Boomerang in David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad, but his wooden performance leaves fans with a lot to be desired and does A Good Day to Die Hard no favors for a franchise that was already struggling to recapture the magic of the original entry.
It would be safe to say that many fans of the Die Hard franchise wish the fifth entry had never been made, making it logical that the thought of a Die Hard 6 might terrify them. Yet, there will always be those fans willing to hold out hope for a return to form, featuring Willis back on top as his greatest character. So, will there be a Die Hard 6? Depending on who you ask, it’s either great news or terrible news for longtime fans of the best and worst Die Hard movies.
Die Hard 6 Is Officially Not Happening
In mid-October 2020, a short video appearing to tease Bruce Willis’ impending return to the Die Hard franchise made fans sit up and take notice. Unfortunately, it was the lead-in to, of all things, a Die Hard-themed battery commercial. Since then, there have been rumors aplenty but producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has recently revealed that a planned sixth installment, simply dubbed McClane, has been canceled following the merger of Fox and Disney. Speaking with Polygon, di Bonaventura revealed that the project was dead in the water, saying it’s “not happening.”

However, there is hope for fans of the franchise who may want something different. Snake Eyes producer di Bonaventura did go on to say that he doesn’t know what the plans are for a potential future sequel or prequel. Should Disney decide to revive the franchise, the producer revealed his plans for the sixth installment, saying “it allowed you the ability to meet the young John McClane and use Bruce […] you sort of got to see both versions of him”. Interestingly enough, the producer also spoke candidly about the nature of the film, stating “it was a project that wasn’t Die Hard that then, eventually, shifted over to Die Hard.”.
Die Hard 6 Cast
When last Die Hard 6, or McClane, was discussed publicly before being canceled, the only confirmed cast member set to return was Bruce Willis as current John McClane. With ex-wife Holly in the plans, one assumes Bonnie Bedelia would also come back to reprise her role, but that’s unclear. Mary Elizabeth Winstead also expressed interest in returning as John and Holly’s daughter Lucy. However, since the plans have fallen through for Die Hard 6, fans of Willis, Winstead, and other potential cast members can look to their other confirmed releases instead.
