Editor’s note: Deerfield Beach senior defensive tackle Alton Tarber wrote the following first-person story to explain why he committed to Georgia Tech.
The 6-foot-2, 320-pound Tarber announced his decision on Tuesday night. He received 19 Power 5 offers and narrowed his list to three finalists: Georgia Tech, Miami and Auburn.
Being a big guy, it’s not all the time that something is a perfect fit.
Georgia Tech is different. It’s the perfect fit for me.
It’s a family up there. I went up there a couple times and it was a good fit for me. Coach Larry Knight, my position coach, I talk to him every day.
Throughout the recruiting process, I was looking for a bond with my position coach. You have to have a good relationship with your position coach and coach Knight is just a good dude.
Other than football and assignments on the D-Line and stuff like that. We talk more about everyday life.
With the other coaches I talked to at other schools, there wasn’t much of that. I’m not going to lie. That’s why he stood out from the rest. So, I want to give a shout out to coach Knight because he’s the main reason why I’m coming to Georgia Tech.
For the last couple months I’ve really been considering them heavily and then I made my final decision last time I was up with my family. I wanted them to feel & see what I saw in Georgia Tech and they did.
Making my announcement is relieving because the recruiting process is stressful. Really stressful. There’s a lot of coaches you have to keep up with and a lot of coaches that you have to talk to.
