F9 star Tyrese Gibson provides a behind-the-scenes look at the film’s rocket-powered Pontiac Fiero that will be used to travel to space.
F9 star, Tyrese Gibson, showed off the film’s rocket car in a new video. Releasing this Friday, June 25, Fast & Furious 9 is expected to be the franchise’s biggest and most ambitious installment yet. The last two Fast films, Furious 7 and The Fate of the Furious, each grossed a billion dollars at the box office. While F9 probably won’t reach this mark due to the lingering effects of COVID-19, it is projected to break pandemic box-office records with an approximate $60 million opening weekend.
F9 will see the sudden appearance of Dominic Toretto’s (Vin Diesel) brother Jakob, played by John Cena, who is seeking retribution. Sung Kang will also reappear as Han, who was previously presumed dead. Other than these surprising character reveals, F9 will literally be taking the long-running franchise to new heights: outer space. With its roots in street racing, each Fast film has been increasingly outlandish and adrenaline-inducing. This led to the running joke that the franchise will eventually have to head to space to continue upping the ante.
Last year, F9 stars Michelle Rodriguez and Ludacris confirmed that the film, in fact, will be heading to space and the most recent trailer sees Roman (Gibson) and Tej (Ludacris) doing just that by way of a rocket-powered car. Now, a video from creator Daniel Mac shows a better look at the Pontiac Fiero that Ro and Tej will use to venture out into the cosmos. Gibson showed off the vehicle at one of the Universal Studios soundstages, “Outer Space Exclusivity,” as he puts it. Watch the video below:
The rocket car’s appearance in the recent trailer was a highlight not only because it confirmed the franchise would be heading to new heights, but it was an acknowledgment of the long-running joke amongst fans. While space travel was originally an absurd notion, it became more and more likely with each installment, until the point that the franchise would be remiss not to capitalize on this celestial opportunity.
With Fast and Furious 10 & 11 already confirmed as the franchise’s final two installments, one has to wonder how they will continue to ratchet up the action and stunts. This is not to mention the all-female Fast spinoff and future Hobbs and Shaw installments which will surely have tough acts to follow. Perhaps another running gag started by fans, a crossover between the two Universal franchises, Fast & Furious and Jurassic World, could also make the leap from parody to reality. But for now, the franchise’s latest and greatest feat will be F9’s spaceflight.
