20th Century Studios unveils a new clip from Free Guy seeing Jodie Comer’s programmer Milly exploring her video game world creation. Comer stars in the film as a programmer of the open-world video game Free City who works with her cohort Keys and non-playable character Guy to stop publisher Antwan from shutting down the title. The Emmy-winning Killing Eve actress stars in the film alongside Ryan Reynolds as the titular character, Joe Keery as Keys, Taika Waititi as Antwan and Lil Rel Howery as fellow NPC Buddy.
Free Guy first began development at 20th Century Fox until Disney acquired the studio, though it would survive the merger and continue at the rebranded 20th Century Studios. In addition to starring in the film, Reynolds acts as a producer with director Shawn Levy. As with many films last year, it saw a number of release delays due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic before settling on its current August 13 theatrical date.
To celebrate tickets going on sale for the film, 20th Century Studios (Via Fandango) has shared a new clip from Free Guy. The video centers on Comer’s Milly as she wanders through the streets of Free City, predicting all of the NPCs movements and dialogue and singing Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy,” all of which captivates Reynolds’ titular protagonist. Check out the clip below:
Though having received praise for her dramatic turns in the BBC’s Thirteen and Starz’ The White Princess, Comer’s breakout role in Killing Eve marked a wonderful turning point for the actress in how it gave her the chance to demonstrate her comedic sensibilities, even if in a darker environment. With Free Guy set to be her biggest film role to date and offer her the opportunity to shine in a brightly-toned adventure, the best seems only yet to come form Comer. The new clip may not offer much in the way of a glimpse at just how funny audiences can expect her to be in the film, it does show the level of confidence she brings to the role of Milly and the fun she’s having with the role.
If early reactions to Free Guy are any indication, this anticipation is well-founded for the sci-fi comedy, with many already praising Comer and Reynolds and calling it the surprise hit of the summer. Though some may be eager to see Comer’s return to dramatic territory with Ridley Scott’s historical drama The Last Duel, the return of the Emmy winner to any screen is sure to get audiences excited. Free Guy is set to hit theaters on August 13.
