From fast banter to pop culture references, the dialogue on Gilmore Girls is some of the best on TV, and it’s fair to say that every main character is funny in their own way. While Rory and Lorelai crack the most jokes out of anyone, thanks to their special connection and ability to talk quickly, their love interests, family members, and friends also make fans laugh in every single episode.
While some main characters are more hilarious than others, every major player on Gilmore Girls has a memorable scene that displays their unique sense of humor.
11 Luke Danes: When He Worried About Taking Care Of Jess
Luke’s funniest scene took place in the season 2 episode ‘Nick & Nora/Sid & Nancy.’ When talking through his nerves about raising Jess, he said, “I don’t even like kids. They always have jam on their hands. Even when there isn’t any jam in the house, they get jam on their hands.”
Lorelai’s response drove home the humor in this important moment, as she said that she thought Jess was too old to have jam on his hands, and this was a significant scene, showing fans that Luke wanted to do a good job helping Jess through this critical time in his life.
10 Paris Geller: When She Didn’t Know That Jamie Asked Her Out
In the season 3 premiere ‘Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days Of Summer,’ Jamie asked Paris out on a date, and when Rory explained what happened, Paris was shocked. She said that she missed it and said, “God, I wish I’d been there.”
Fans didn’t love all of Paris’s storylines, but she and Jamie had a heartfelt relationship. Paris was the funniest when she was honest, as she’s known for her dry wit and clever commentary, and in this scene, she was both vulnerable and real. While sometimes she could be too mean, she was sweet and innocent when dealing with Jamie, and it was nice to see a new side of her.
9 Sookie St. James: When She Made Up A Song About Dean
In the season 1 episode ‘Love And War And Snow,’ Sookie had her funniest scene ever, as she made Rocky Road cookies for Dean. She made up a song where she sang “Cookies for the love and the Dean and the cookies for the love and the Dean.”
Fans loved how much Sookie wanted Rory and Dean to be happy together, as she had known Rory since she was young and would have done anything for both her and Lorelai. Sookie’s humor was always quirky, and sometimes she made herself laugh the most. This is a perfect example of how much joy Sookie found in the everyday.
8 Dean Forester: When He Talked About Neil Young
When Rory showed Dean a video, she asked if he thought that Neil Young looked cool, and he responded, “Neil Young looks cool because he’s Neil Young, not because he’s wearing a tux.”
Of all the Gilmore Girls characters, both major and secondary, Dean doesn’t come to mind as the one with the best sense of humor. He’s kind but super serious and careful, especially when he’s around Lorelai as he’s nervous about gaining her approval. He’s funniest when he’s just being himself and explaining his opinions, like in this scene.
7 Logan Huntzberger: When He Talked About Dry Cleaning
Logan had a funny scene in the ‘Winter’ episode of A Year In The Life. When Rory asked Logan how his day was, he said, “Well, I had my dry cleaning delivered” and when Rory thought that meant he had a dull day, he joked, “I don’t know. I really like these pants, so…”
Thanks to his charming personality, Logan’s sense of humor is very dry, and like Lorelai and Jess, he makes jokes when he’s nervous, uncomfortable, or trying to diffuse tension, and fans can always tell when he’s covering up how he really feels. In this scene, he and Rory ignored the most important subject: they were seeing each other but he was actually engaged.
6 Jess Mariano: When Luke Pushed Him Into A Lake
In season 2, Luke told Jess that Taylor accused him of stealing money, and when Jess yelled about how much he hated being in Stars Hollow, Luke pushed him into the lake.
This was a hilarious and surprising moment, as no one thought that Luke would actually do something like this, and Jess seemed totally in awe that his uncle would act this way. Jess didn’t have a good reputation in Stars Hollow and while he confessed to Luke that it was hard for him to be away from his home and friends, it was funny watching him be the picture of a rebellious teenager.
5 Lane Kim: When She Was In Awe That Zack Proposed
Zack proposed in Luke’s diner and at first, Lane didn’t want to talk to him. He shared how much she meant to him and while he was clearly nervous, he was able to ask her to marry him.
This was Lane’s funniest scene on Gilmore Girls, as she said yes and was in a total daze afterward, giving customers the wrong orders and walking around with a goofy smile on her face. Fans cheered on this couple and were touched to see Lane in a good place.
4 Richard Gilmore: When He Took A Magazine Quiz
Richard is another character who is sometimes hilarious without attempting to make any jokes at all. He made fans laugh in the season 1 episode ‘Rory’s Birthday Parties’ when he took a magazine quiz about “which season are you?!” and told Rory that he was an Autumn.
This is a memorable episode as Emily and Richard went to Lorelai’s house and Emily was emotional about all the time she had spent not being with her daughter. Richard’s line was a nice, light-hearted moment that broke up the tension and heavy emotions.
3 Emily Gilmore: When She De-Cluttered Her House
In A Year In The Life, Emily shared with Lorelai that she was de-cluttering her house and following Marie Kondo’s method. She explained the concept of seeing if items sparked joy, and Lorelai was amazed that her mom was getting rid of so much stuff.
Like her late husband, Emily was the funniest when she had no idea, and this is her best scene from the revival. She approached cleaning up her house the way that she did everything else: ruthlessly, without a second thought, and with a staff that she could boss around. Fans were glad to see that while Emily’s life had changed, she was still exactly the same.
2 Rory Gilmore: When She Mourned The Loss Of Logan And Coffee
The season 6 episode ‘The Perfect Dress’ saw Rory upset over breaking up with Logan. When she returned to Yale, she spoke to a therapist about it and said, “I don’t think I can take running into him every day in the halls, and in the paper and the coffee cart… Oh my god! I’m gonna have to quit drinking coffee! And I love coffee!”
Fans know that Logan negatively affected Rory’s life, but her passionate speech about her adoration of coffee made the situation seem much less serious, and fans knew that she was going to be okay. Coffee means a lot to Rory and Lorelai, and this scene was not only funny but also proved that Rory hadn’t lost too much of herself during this difficult and stressful time.
1 Lorelai Gilmore: When She Joked About Her Relationship With Rory
While Lorelai’s witty sense of humor carries many scenes, and it’s hard to pick just one hilarious moment, her speech in the pilot stands out. When Rory got accepted to Chilton, she said, “This is it. She can finally go to Harvard like she’s always wanted and get the education that I never got and get to do all the things that I never got to do and then I can resent her for it and we can finally have a normal mother-daughter relationship.”
Lorelai knew that their connection was more fun and casual than the one between other parents and children. While a less funny character would have simply said that Rory’s acceptance was good news, Lorelai made a joke that was intelligent and true.
