Loki writer, Michael Waldron, responds to fan theories that Kang will be the next Thanos for Phase 4 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Michael Waldron, head writer for the Loki show on Disney+, has commented on fan theories discussing Kang, played by Jonathan Majors, and his role in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ever since his appearance in the season finale, fans have been wondering what is next for the famous Marvel villain. It has been theorized that Kang could take a similar role to Thanos’, having him show up in different projects before becoming the main threat in a bigger film.
In the finale of Loki, it was revealed that Kang, going by “He Who Remains,” was the main architect behind the Time Variance Agency. This came as a shock, as fans had been debating on who the main villain was for the show. After viewers find out that there are many variants of Kang in the multiverse fighting for power, Sylvie ends up killing him. This version of Kang’s last words end up being “see you soon,” which sets up the possibilities for other Kang appearances. With the multiverse in shambles, there are many different ways and times that Kang the Conqueror could make an appearance in the MCU, similar to Thanos.
Now, Michael Waldron has revealed his thoughts on Kang being the next Thanos in an interview with The Playlist Podcast. While he has not said too much due to the secrecy surrounding the MCU and its projects, Waldron still gave fans enough content in his quote to excite them. He also praised Jonathan Majors and the way he approached his role as the He Who Remains version of Kang, while also teasing his other variants. Majors was highly praised for his role as Kang, and fans are excited to see him take on other variants. Check out what he said when asked about Majors and Kang’s future below:
“I mean he’s a hell of an actor and a hell of a performer. I don’t know, you heard him in the show: ‘If you think I’m evil, wait until you meet my Variants.’ So, we’ll see.”
This quote seems to hint at what is to come for Kang and the MCU. Fans will remember that Thanos had multiple appearances in the MCU over the years before he was the main villain in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Having Thanos appear over the course of multiple films solidified him as a true threat for the heroes in the MCU, and it seems as if Kang is going down a similar path. Kang will be the main villain in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, which is due to hit theaters on February 17, 2023. Of course, he could show up in more projects between now and then, whether he appears a film or Disney+ show as a minor character or in an end credits scene.
With the quote from Waldron and the possibility of his future appearances in other projects, it is no surprise that Kang is positioned to be the next Thanos. There are many possible MCU projects he could appear in, such as season 2 of Loki or Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While it is not known for sure where Kang will appear next, fans can surely expect to see him somewhere involving the collapsing multiverse.
