In the latest issue of Marvel’s X-Factor, the death of the Scarlet Witch has been discovered, and it could lead to a new Avengers vs. X-Men rematch.
Warning! Spoilers ahead for X-Factor #10
In the latest issue of Marvel Comics’ X-Factor, the X-Men have just discovered that the Scarlet Witch is dead, and it could lead to a new Avengers vs. X-Men rematch. Having been murdered and left in the bushes outside of the Hellfire Gala, all eyes will be pointed towards Magneto as the culprit and primary suspect. Cover art and solicitations for the upcoming Trial of Magneto event have even confirmed that the Avengers will be attending a funeral for Wanda Maximoff. However, that same cover art sees them in some significant conflict with Magneto himself, a war that could lead to a war with the X-Men’s nation as a whole.

In the final issue of X-Factor from writer Leah Williams, David Baldéon, David Messina, and Lucas Werneck, the Hellfire Gala was winding down and coming to close when Wanda Maximoff’s body was discovered by none other than her son Tommy (also known as Speed). Soon, more of the X-Men and members of Krakoa’s Quiet Council arrived to investigate the body, and Wolverine quickly determined that Magento needed to be found right away, pegging him as the primary suspect. The presumption isn’t a stretch as the Scarlet Witch was last seen alive with Magneto himself in the preceding SWORD #6, as the two of them had just decided to reunite as father and daughter despite their lack of biological relation.
With The Trial of Magneto event featuring the fallout of Wanda’s murder, the preview for the upcoming second issue has revealed that the Avengers will become involved, attending Wanda’s funeral. This makes sense, seeing as how the Scarlet Witch and her twin brother Quicksilver were both Avengers. However, the cover art does see Earth’s Mightiest Heroes doing battle with Magneto himself, which may be a hinting at them conflicting with the nation of Krakoa as a whole, leading to a brand new Avengers vs X-Men rematch.
While this could simply be teasing that the Avengers will end up helping the X-Men contain a resistant Magneto, the implications could be far more disastrous. It remains to be seen what will become of Wanda’s body, and whether or she’s able to be resurrected using Krakoa’s protocols given her status as a non-mutant. Furthermore, there aren’t many mutants who wouldn’t want to see Wanda returned to life even if she could be brought back considering her dark history with mutantkind (House of M) and how much she’s been vilified by Krakoa as a result, being known as The Pretender. As if that wasn’t complicated enough, imagine if the Avengers decided to assert themselves, taking a side one way or another?
Wanda’s murder is a powderkeg that will no doubt have disastrous consequences for Krakoa, and it could include a potential new conflict and rift between the Avengers and X-Men. While past events have made it clear that neither side wants another Avengers vs X-Men repeat, it could end up happening all the same given how tense the Trial of Magneto will be, being full or rivaling opinions and viewpoints. As such, it’s very possible that the Avengers’ presence will only make things worse in future X-Men issues.
