Michelle Yeoh explains why she was so eager to join James Cameron’s Avatar sequels, saying it was largely because of the director himself.
Michelle Yeoh explains why she was so eager to sign on for James Cameron’s Avatar sequels. 2009’s Avatar, much like many of Cameron’s past movies, changed the game when it came to special effects for sci-fi movies. Avatar was a critical and financial hit, and Cameron soon sought to create sequels set within the vibrant world of Pandora. Despite the fact that the first film reigns as the highest-grossing movie of all time, however, it took several years for the Avatar sequels to begin production due to Cameron’s dedication to creating better filmmaking technology.
At this point, little is known about the story of the sequels, of which there will be four total. Avatar 2 is said to pick up with the star-crossed couple from the first film, Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), after they’ve formed a family. An unknown threat sends them to the oceans of Pandora, where they encounter new Na’vi characters The Avatar sequels have assembled an impressive cast, including Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, and the aforementioned Yeoh.
While promoting her new movie Gunpowder Milkshake with CinemaBlend, Yeoh talked about why she jumped at the chance to work with Cameron on the Avatar sequels. The iconic actress shared that she would’ve been happy to collaborate with Cameron on anything because she is a fan of his world-building. Yeoh said:
“I said to James ‘I don’t know why I’m here, I’m here because you’re a genius and I am the biggest fan. I mean, I would be your coffee lady. I would just come here and sit down and watch you’ because he really is a genius. He’s created these amazing worlds and there’s just no end to it. You just sit there in awe and listen, and he’s very giving and sharing, so it makes life so easy.”
Little is known about Yeoh’s Avatar character, save for that she is a human scientist named Dr. Karina Mogue. She is expected to appear in all of the sequels; a set photo earlier this year even showed her alongside Cameron during production on Avatar 3. These movies are just the tip of the iceberg for Yeoh’s packed slate, as she’s also set to appear in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings later this year and will lead Netflix’s The Witcher prequel.
Yeoh is right about Cameron’s world-building abilities, and they are a large reason why many fans are excited to see Avatar 2 and beyond. These movies present an opportunity to dig deeper into the world of Pandora and its people, and the early pieces of concept art promise the visuals will be stunning. With Avatar 2 not scheduled to arrive until December 2022, official peeks at the film are likely still a long ways off. Still, it sounds like fans can expect more of Cameron’s singular vision. The Avatar sequels stand among some of the most anticipated projects of the next few years, and it will be thrilling to see them come to life.
