Olivia Moultrie to sign NWSL contract after Thorns acquire rights in trade with OL Reign

Fifteen-year-old midfielder Olivia Moultrie is in the process of signing a contract with the NWSL and will play for the Portland Thorns after they acquired her rights in a trade with the OL Reign, multiple sources told The Athletic.

Moultrie was claimed in the discovery process by the Reign on Friday and was traded to the Thorns over the weekend for a third-round draft pick, the sources said. Moultrie has been training with the Thorns for the past two years since turning professional when she inked a nine-year endorsement deal with Nike at the age of 13.

The signing comes after Moultrie sued the league for the right to play, claiming the NWSL’s age rule that did not allow teams to sign players under the age of 18 violated federal antitrust law. U.S. District Judge Karin J. Immergut
