Cobra Kai star, Xolo Maridueña, takes to social media to all but confirm his involvement in the upcoming Blue Beetle movie for HBO Max.
Rumored Blue Beetle actor Xolo Maridueña has teased his role in the upcoming film with new images on his social media. The young actor got his start with a main role on the hit television series Parenthood on NBC. Since 2018, he has starred as Miguel Diaz on the hit series, Cobra Kai, a spin-off sequel series to The Karate Kid trilogy. Cobra Kai has been a critical and audience hit, recently earning an Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series.
In February 2021, it was reported that a Blue Beetle film was being developed with Charm City Kings director Angel Manuel Soto helming the project. The film is reportedly set to be one of many DC films set to premiere exclusively on HBO Max alongside Batgirl. News broke that Maridueña was in talks to play the lead role of Jaime Reyes, a.k.a. the Blue Beetle in the upcoming film on August 2, 2021, which happened to be the date Warner Bros. held the premiere for the DC comic adaptation, The Suicide Squad.
Those rumors took on a whole new level when Maridueña was spotted at the L.A. premiere of The Suicide Squad. Maridueña took to social media to show a photo of him and Blue Beetle director, Angel Manuel Soto, at the premiere. He also responded to his high school’s, Cathedral High L.A., Twitter post that celebrated Maridueña getting the role, which is so far the first official word that he has gotten the role. Check out the tweets below:
Created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hammer, Jaime Reyes was introduced in Infinite Crisis #3 in 2006, before becoming the Blue Beetle in Infinite Crisis #5. Despite being a relatively new character, he has broken out as a fan-favorite and has been featured in a number of adaptations of DC characters including Smallville and Young Justice. It seems fitting that Maridueña got the role as Honest Trailers for Cobra Kai even spotlighted the actor as a perfect pick for the Marvel hero Nova, who has a similar origin to Blue Beetle.
The news of Maridueña being cast as Blue Beetle in the trades before officially being confirmed by the studio is similar to the stories of Tatiana Maslany being cast as She-Hulk or Oscar Issac as Moon Knight. Both actors were reported being cast in the trades long before Disney and Marvel made an official announcement, even though all the obvious signs pointed to them being cast. Warner Bros. tends to be quick to confirm casting, as they did with Sasha Callie as Supergirl or Leslie Grace as Batgirl. Maridueña’s social media all but confirms he has the role and with production on Blue Beetle looking to start in the Fall of 2021, it is likely that more casting news will be arriving soon.
