Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3 Story Details Teased By Star

Exclusive: Actor Eugene Cordero teases new Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3 story details, including his character’s “awesome” story arc.

Eugene Cordero is just as excited as audiences for the release of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3 as he teases new story details. Developed by Solar Opposites co-creator Mike McMahan, the animated series centers on the low-ranking officers of the USS Cerritos as they deal with their menial jobs board the Starfleet ship as well as their various missions on a variety of alien planets. Tawny Newsome leads the cast of Star Trek: Lower Decks alongside Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, Eugene Cordero, Dawnn Lewis, Jerry O’Connell, Fred Tatasciore and Gillian Vigman.

Marking the second animated adaptation of the long-running franchise, Star Trek: Lower Decks initially debut to mixed-to-positive reviews from critics, with praise directed towards its more humorous approach while criticism was aimed at its failure to broaden the series. Season 2 would be met with far better reviews from critics and audiences alike, citing the better embrace of its own tone and story as setting a new path for the series. Star Trek: Lower Decks is renewed through season 4 and one star is sharing what’s to come from the show’s future.

In a recent exclusive interview with Screen Rant for a Simply Beverages ad campaign, Eugene Cordero offered some insight for Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3. The star expressed his excitement for the show’s return, teasing a “very Trekky” new season and calling his character’s arc “really cool.” See what Cordero shared below:

“Yes, yeah, we’ve already finished most, if not all, of season 3’s recordings and have been moving on to more past that. I think we’re coming out pretty soon here in the summer, so you’ll be able to see the journey that Rutherford takes in this, and it’s awesome. It’s really cool. It’s very Trekky in that way that the writers of the show are just so on top of and love kind of turning the kind of storylines that you’ve already seen on its head and Easter eggs all over the place. There’s a lot of that stuff happening in season 3 and I think there’s even more of Rutherford figuring out who he is before the Oculus and everything happened. It’s neat to see, but he’s still a goof and he’s still really good at Engineering.”

Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2 saw the titular crew of the Cerritos in a difficult position when their Captain, Dawnn Lewis’ Carol Freeman, is arrested for allegedly detonating a Veruvian bomb on Pakled Planet. Her arrest came in the midst of the captain receiving an offer for a promotion that would take her off the ship, the idea of which saddened her daughter, Tawny Newsome’s Beckett Mariner, who in turn tried to get the senior staff to turn against Freeman. Additionally, Cordero’s Sam Rutherford discovered a memory in his storage space pointing towards his cybernetic implant being installed against his wishes, putting him in a difficult position given his challenges of having the implant throughout the show.

Though Cordero may have kept mum on exact Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3 story details, his tease of a “very Trekky” new season of the animated show is sure to come as an exciting idea for fans of both the series and franchise. It’s also interesting to note that Cordero indicates the new season will premiere this summer, which would fall in line with previous reports of a third quarter 2022 premiere, while previous seasons made their debuts in August. While audiences await a release date announcement, they can catch up with the first two seasons of Star Trek: Lower Decks streaming on Paramount+ now.
