The initial reactions for Warner Bros.’ latest DCEU film directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad, arrive, weeks before its public premiere.
The first reactions to James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad have finally arrived. After more than half a year of hiatus, Warner Bros.’ DCEU continues with the villain-centric movie. Deemed a soft reboot/sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 original film, Suicide Squad, The Suicide Squad brings some familiar faces and teaming them up with several new players for Amanda Waller’s (Viola Davis) upcoming mission.
Born out of Gunn’s most difficult professional experience, the Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker scored the gig to write and direct The Suicide Squad shortly after he was fired by Disney from the MCU. Eventually, he was rehired to continue his work with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but having previously committed to the DCEU film, Gunn focused on making the villain-focused blockbuster. Like the original Suicide Squad, its follow-up sees Waller rounding up some of the franchise’s best antagonists for a dangerous mission in exchange for shortened jail time. Task Force X will have to work together if they want to successfully destroy any trace of Project Starfish, not to mention keep themselves alive.
With less than a month away from hitting theaters and HBO Max, several critics have been given early access to watch The Suicide Squad. Now, the embargo has been lifted and non-spoiler initial reactions to the film are now available online. Check out the round-up below:
Had the chance to see #TheSuicideSquad a few weeks ago and MY GOODNESS was it awesome.
It explodes off the screen. You’ll love the characters. Epic scale. Awesome action. It’s beyond deserving of the R-rating, by the way. Wild stuff.
People are going to love it. SEE IT IN IMAX! pic.twitter.com/LtyiFF4rvu

.@JamesGunn’s #TheSuicideSquad is gloriously insane and so, so fun. (After watching it, you’ll think you might have dreamed it.) Everyone is excellent and deeply committed to the material and its singular mood and wild ass aesthetic. Can’t wait to ride this rollercoaster again.🦈 pic.twitter.com/rRhvH3A75k

Surprise, surprise: James Gunn knows how to assemble a team of badass idiots and make magic happen. #TheSuicideSquad brings equal measures of gore and F-bombs, all in the name of dumb juvenile entertainment. Easily the most fun I’ve had with any studio release this summer season.

#TheSuicideSquad is one big playground for James Gunn, and you can tell he loved playing in every corner of it. The cast is out of this world, and the film is the bloodiest DCEU film yet. The highlights are Killer Shark and Polka Dot Man. pic.twitter.com/llWyA8yQmt

#TheSuicideSquad is fantastic! A no holds barred, superhero/comics bonanza. Unpredictable in story, unique in style & full of risks. It’s also violent & hilarious. Action set pieces are insane. Idris Elba, Margot Robbie & rest of cast are awesome. @JamesGunn has done it again. pic.twitter.com/7aLiMLPPf5

#TheSuicideSquad is such a fun, violent and entertaining film that feels like a perfectly balanced mix of blood, comedy and heart. @JamesGunn is a genius and takes full advantage of the hard R rating, this is definitely not a movie for kids. Includes two post credits scenes. pic.twitter.com/555hoa1Bht

#TheSuicideSquad is a gory & explosive time that perfectly encaptures the chaos & violence of the source material. The cast is excellent together and there’s never a dull moment. Unexpected & fun, one of DC’s best. pic.twitter.com/4LXhNjBo7m

Any doubts you might have over #TheSuicideSquad will vanish after the outrageous opening. It’s a violent, hilarious and unpredictable blockbuster, and everyone will have their own favourite from the terrific cast. It’s just so entertaining that you’ll want to see again instantly. pic.twitter.com/kI8YjqZdsw

I had the BEST time watching #TheSuicideSquad — it is a swing-for-the-fences kind of comic book movie & I love that. It’s big, bold & visually stunning. You will see James Gunn’s horror roots splattered all over this thing. It’s violent, but hilarious. Angry, but also VERY sweet. pic.twitter.com/qUbXQ75abt

Based on this selection of social media posts, the general consensus is that Gunn delivers on his promise of making a satisfying Suicide Squad film. While these comments couldn’t get into plot specifics for the movie, it seems like the cast worked together, thanks to the ensemble’s chemistry. Characters such as Killer Shark, Polka Dot Man, and Bloodsport were mentioned as standouts. Meanwhile, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn is, as expected, great in the project. The filmmaker also seemed to make the most out of the blockbuster’s R-rating, with comments about Gunn infusing horror elements throughout. Overall, The Suicide Squad supposedly puts the chaos from the team in the comic book on the big screen and is very fun to watch from beginning to end.
This is one great way for the DCEU to return to the cinemas after Wonder Woman 1984‘s controversial hybrid release. Interestingly, The Suicide Squad is deemed one of the best films from the franchise thus far, and considering the fact that Warner Bros. has already greenlit the Peacemaker spin-off show, it’s safe to say that they were quite confident with Gunn’s work on the project long before anyone from the public has seen it. Now, fans would just have to wait until August 6 to find out what all this positive buzz is all about.
