The Suicide Squad Releases First Soundtrack Song

Writer/director James Gunn shares the first track from composer John Murphy’s original score, titled “So This Is the Famous Suicide Squad.”

The Suicide Squad has released the first song from its soundtrack. Written and directed by Guardians of the Galaxy’s James Gunn, the upcoming DCEU film follows the titular team of supervillains as they venture into the jungles of the fictional South American nation, Corto Maltese. There, Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), and company will be tasked with destroying a Nazi-era prison lab before their mission is upended by a kaiju-sized starfish known as Starro.

As a sequel/soft reboot, Gunn’s Suicide Squad returns a few characters from David Ayer’s version from 2016, such as Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) and the aforementioned trio. The film will also feature a mélange of obscure characters from DC’s comics, like Bloodsport (Idris Elba), King Shark (Sylvester Stallone) Peacemaker (John Cena), Savant (Michael Rooker), Arm-Fall-Off-Boy (Nathan Fillion), Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian), Weasel (Sean Gunn), Blackguard (Pete Davidson), Thinker (Peter Capaldi), and Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior). While Gunn has already released a list of songs that didn’t make the cut for the soundtrack, now the first song from the film’s original score has been released.

Via his Twitter, Gunn shared a link to listen to the first piece from John Murphy’s original score for The Suicide Squad. The track is titled “So This Is the Famous Suicide Squad.” The score, from Troll Court Records and WaterTower Music, will be released in its entirety on August 6, coinciding with the film’s release. John Murphy is a British composer behind many original film scores, such as Snatch, 28 Days Later, Kick-Ass, and is now working on the Peacemaker series. Based on Murphy’s first track for The Suicide Squad, his score sounds punky and full of attitude, much like the titular squad themselves. It wouldn’t be difficult to imagine the song accompanying an opening montage introducing the film’s array of nutty convicts.

Since Guardians of the Galaxy, Gunn has been more well known for his soundtrack choices, which range from obscure songs to classic rock hits. Songs such as “Come and Get Your Love” by Redbone and “Fooled Around And Fell In Love” by Elvin Bishop actually factor into the film’s universe via mixtapes that Peter Quill’s mother made for him. However, Gunn has already said The Suicide Squad’s music will be a lot different than Guardians, but will play an equally important role in the upcoming film’s universe.
