Donald Trump’s impromptu decision to travel to New York for a mixed martial arts fight in 2019 cost taxpayers more than $ 250,000 as the Secret Service had to fight to provide security for the president on a particularly busy weekend in the city, according to federal records.
The records, which were obtained by the Daily News in response to a Freedom of Information Act request, reveal that the Secret Service only received a one-week notice of Trump’s overnight stay in Manhattan for an Ultimate event. Fighting Championship in Madison. Square Garden on November 2, 2019.
The delayed announcement was seen as a logical headache for the Secret Service, which had to scour hotel rooms for dozens of agents defending Trump, such as the New York City Marathon over the weekend.
Secret Service lodging totaled $ 224,212, records show, with agents crashing into luxurious hotels like the Royalton on Park Ave. and the Intercontinental on 48th St. The largest lodging expense was $ 44,402 for rooms in the Marriott Marquis in Times Square, according to records.
An internal Secret Service email letter received by The News also suggested that many hotels were reserved at the last minute.
Things could change a bit. I still have no information about the hotel, three days before Trump’s arrival, a Secret Service sergeant wrote to his colleagues on October 30, 2019.
Another $ 22,005.51 in taxpayer cash was spent on travel expenses for agents to drive back and forth from the city for Trump’s visit, according to receipts.
Records show the Secret Service distributed an additional $ 6,350 in tents to set up near Trump Tower, where the former president was staying the night after the UFC fight between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz. The agency uses tents at security checkpoints.
The total Secret Service bill for Trump’s trip was $ 252,567.51, according to records. However, the records are heavily redacted, which means that the actual price may be even higher.
Trump spent less than 16 hours in the city for the 2019 tour, according to Secret Service documents.
A Trump spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday.
During Trump’s visit, the House of Representatives was investigating as part of his first impeachment trial, and dozens of protesters showed up at Madison Square Garden for the UFC fight.
When Trump entered the arena, boos erupted inside, while protesters engaged in similar anti-Trump antics outside the Garden.
We’re trying to avoid an existential threat, Jane Aptaker, a Harlem protester, told The News at the time.
