Pat Collins was a bit worried when he saw snow on the field on Saturday morning at Townsend Sports Complex and had to remove it before the Montague 6 soccer team semi-final match against Grayling.

In the early to mid-afternoon, visiting Vikings were in a much bigger problem. They couldn’t stop Montag, they definitely couldn’t keep up and things went up from there in the Wildcats’ 49-14 win.

The highest rated Montag (11-0) qualifies for the state final at Ford Field for the second time in three seasons. When the Wildcats face Clinton (10-1) at 4:30 PM. On Friday in Detroit, they will seek their first official championship since 2009, when Montag won consecutive titles.

Clinton beat Constantine in the other semi-final match on Saturday, 40-6.

Montag made a slow start against Grayling (7-4) after an early tumble. Wildcats trailed 7-0 in the first quarter. They tied it up, then started pumping 14 points in the second quarter and 21 into the third on their way to build 42-7.

“I give them a lot of credit for having a good game plan. They were well trained, had some nails. Collins said in a phone interview with MLive,” You can say they were strong and big and had some players. ”

“We settled down. Sometimes we just confuse people, we understand and then the ability to distribute the ball as needed.”

Midfielder Drew Collins was smart again to montage. After a week of completing his 12 passes at 218 yards and three touchdowns in a 41–16 regional win over Montrose, the Associated Press teams 5-6 Player of the Year coped well against Grayling. Collins finished 12 of 16 passes at 254 yards with two TDs and no interceptions.

Owen Peterson, who also had two defensive options for Montage, got a touchdown pass at 13 yards and Collins called Andrew Cowie in a 35 yard shot.

Helping Junior Running Back Dylan Everett counterbalance the Wildcats’ attack with 100 yards and 3 TDs (27, 3, 16 yards) at just 11 gigs.

Collins highlighted the defensive play of corner back Isaac Jarca and the defensive intervention of Hayden MacDonald. Jarca, who last week set records for interceptions in one match (three) and one season (nine), scored 10 tackles and provided a solid defense. MacDonald, the Associated Press first-team player, finished eight tackles, including two for lost yards.

Sam Smith added six wildcats.

“I would say our defense was really good again. Not consistently right away, but I thought they took drastic action.”

“Jarka gave some amazing plays again, and some knockouts against a great 6-4 player who is an awesome kid. He got there and tossed the ball many times, like playing the big third down or 50-50 plays that can go in any direction.”

Grayling junior David Milliken, a member of the Associated Press’s senior squad, scored both landings for the Vikings on carriers from 3 to 9 yards.

At one point, Collins thought he would have to delay the start of the game so that the team of volunteers had time to plow the snow off the field. However, between 15 and 20 people showed up with a group of shovels, snowmobiles and other machines and finished the job.

“We were struggling a little. The guys did a great job. When I first arrived, I thought maybe we should take a step back from the game, but we recruited a bunch of people from the community. Collins, whose team hosted three playoffs at home,” said It is amazing to see all of these assistants appear and do a great job getting him started. ”

“I thought he might have been in his last really good game so I guess we let him rest today. It was a good deck for playing a game, but you probably matured well in the end.

After losing 31-30 hearts in extra time to Maple City Glen Lake in the semifinals last year and losing a 42-28 decision to Jackson Lumen Christi in the 2018 state finals, Wildcats focused all the attention. Season to bring back “the gauntlet,” as Collins calls the State Championship Cup.

Collins and Wildcats aren’t afraid to be daring when it comes to their goals. Really, it’s a goal: to win the state championship.

“I mean, you know, if you lose in the first round, you don’t achieve your goal. If you lose in the second round, you won’t do that either. If you lose in the final, you won’t get it either,” Collins said. “We had that mentality. The kids’ goal was always to win the state championship.

“Today there was no cup. It was just a chance to have a chance to win it, so we are happy to be back in this position where we have a chance to try to win another title.”
